Frequently asked questions

Answers for employees and employers navigating the SAP process.

Who is required to use a SAP?

+
Any DOT safety-sensitive employee who violates drug and alcohol regulations — including a positive test, refusal to test, or other violation — must complete the SAP process before returning to safety-sensitive duties. This covers FMCSA, FAA, FTA, FRA, PHMSA, and USCG regulated workers.
Is the process confidential?

+
Yes. SAP evaluations are conducted with strict confidentiality. Clinical details you share during your evaluation are protected. The SAP is only required to communicate limited compliance-related information to the employer — not the details of your personal disclosure.
How long does the SAP process take?

+
Timelines vary depending on the recommended program. Most employees return to duty within 30 to 90 days after completing treatment and passing the follow-up evaluation. We work to schedule initial evaluations within a few business days.
Who pays for the evaluation?

+
DOT regulations do not specify who pays — it is determined by company policy or employment agreements. In many cases the employee pays for the SAP evaluation. We’re happy to discuss fees transparently before you commit to anything.
Can I choose my own SAP?

+
Yes. Employees have the right to select any DOT-qualified SAP. Your employer cannot require you to use a specific provider. If your employer has given you a referral, you are still free to seek an evaluation with a SAP of your own choosing.
